Test the QR code before the packaging goes to print

Testing a packaging QR code means confirming, on the real printed material, that a normal phone scans it reliably and lands on the right page. A code that scans perfectly from a laptop screen can fail on a matte pouch under shop lighting, and the only version that matters is the one on the substrate you are actually printing.

    Check the code on the printed proof

    Scan from the physical proof on the real substrate. Matte, gloss, foil, kraft, and flexible film all behave differently, and film that curves on a filled pack behaves differently again from the same film lying flat.

    Confirm the quiet zone survived layout

    QR codes need a clear margin on all sides to be found by a scanner. This is the single most common failure introduced late in design, when the code is nudged toward a seam, a fold, or another element to save space.

    Check size against the real viewing distance

    The code has to work at the distance and angle someone will actually hold the pack. Small codes on a curved surface are the usual culprit. Your printer can advise a minimum module size for their process and substrate — ask them rather than guessing, and confirm against the GS1 General Specifications if the code carries a GTIN.

    Test with several phones in real conditions

    Use a mix of recent and older handsets, iOS and Android, and try it in the kind of lighting a shop actually has. Include at least one phone that is not the newest model in the office.

    Verify the destination and lock it

    Scan and read the resulting page as a shopper would. Confirm the printed hostname is the one you intend to live with permanently, because that part cannot be changed after the run.

The failures that actually happen

In practice, packaging codes fail for a short list of mundane reasons: the quiet zone was eaten during a late layout change, the code was placed across a fold or seam, contrast was lost to a tinted or metallic background, or the code was scaled down to fit a crowded panel.

Every one of these is cheap to catch on a proof and extremely expensive to catch after a production run. This is the step to be pedantic about.

Design choices that cost you scans

Two decisions cause more trouble than the rest. The first is placing the code on a heavily curved or deformable surface, where the pattern distorts on a filled pack in ways it never does on a flat artwork file.

The second is styling — inverting the code so light modules sit on dark, tinting it to match the palette, or placing it over a photograph. Cameras need reliable contrast between dark and light modules with a clear margin. A code is a functional element on the pack, and it is worth defending as one.

01How small can a QR code on packaging be?

It depends on the printing process, the substrate, and how much data the code carries, so there is no single safe number. Ask your printer for the minimum module size their process holds on your material, and confirm against the GS1 General Specifications if the code carries a GTIN. Then test the printed proof rather than trusting the calculation.

02Can I put my logo in the middle of the code?

QR codes tolerate some obstruction through error correction, but every decorative change spends part of that tolerance — and printing on real packaging spends some too. If you do it, keep it small, centred, and prove it on the printed substrate rather than on screen.

03What if we find a problem after printing?

If the code scans but points somewhere wrong or outdated, that is fixable — the destination is a setting, not part of the artwork. If the code does not scan reliably at all, the packaging has to be reprinted, which is exactly why proofing on the real material matters.
