Questions before you print

The questions below are the ones brands ask before committing a QR code to a print run. Where the honest answer is that something depends on retailers, printers, or timing outside our control, we say so rather than smoothing it over.

IN SHORT

  • A GS1 Digital Link is your GTIN written as a web address.
  • Keep your UPC barcode; checkout readiness for 2D codes still varies.
  • One subdomain connects your brand domain without moving your website.
  • The printed hostname is permanent; everything behind it is editable.

The short version

If you read nothing else: the address printed inside your QR code can never change, so decide the domain before the run and test the code on real material. Everything behind that address — the page, the links, where the code sends people — stays under your control for as long as the packaging exists.

Common questions

01What is a GS1 Digital Link?

It is a web address built around a GS1 identifier such as your GTIN. Put that address in a QR code and the same product identity can connect shoppers, retailers, and apps to the information meant for them.

02Will it work at retail checkout?

QR Codes powered by GS1 can carry the GTIN used at checkout, but retailer readiness varies. Most brands will keep the existing UPC alongside the QR code during the transition. LabelRoot helps you build and test the digital experience without pretending every checkout lane has already changed.

03Do I need to move my website?

No. You add one subdomain such as id.yourbrand.com. LabelRoot handles that subdomain while your existing website, store, and email keep working exactly as they do now.

04What happens if we cancel?

Use a brand-owned link if long-term control matters to your team. Because your company controls that domain, you can point it somewhere else later. We will document what happens to LabelRoot-hosted links before a pilot code goes into production.

05Do I need a GTIN to start?

Yes, for a retail product. It is the number already behind your UPC or EAN barcode. GTINs are issued by GS1 in your country if you do not have one.

06Can I change the QR code after printing?

You cannot change the printed pattern or the address encoded in it. You can change the page that address opens, and where the code sends people, at any time.

07How small can the code be on the pack?

It depends on your printing process, substrate, and how much data the code carries. Ask your printer for the minimum module size they can hold, confirm against the GS1 General Specifications if the code carries a GTIN, and test a printed proof before locking artwork.

08What do the analytics show?

Aggregate scan counts per product, timing, approximate region, and which links people clicked on the page. They do not identify individual shoppers.

09Is LabelRoot affiliated with GS1?

No. LabelRoot is an independent software product that implements the GS1 Digital Link standard, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by GS1.
