Print the link on your own domain

You can print the QR code's address on a subdomain your company owns, such as id.yourbrand.com, by adding a single DNS record. Your main website, online store, and email keep running exactly as they do now, and because your team controls the domain, you keep the ability to point that printed traffic somewhere else in the future.

IN SHORT

  • One CNAME record on a subdomain is the whole setup.
  • Your existing website, store, and email are untouched.
  • Certificates are issued and renewed automatically.
  • Owning the domain is what makes the printed link portable long-term.

Step by step

  1. 01
    Pick a subdomain

Something short and stable, such as id.yourbrand.com. It will be printed on packaging for years, so choose a name that is not tied to a campaign, a season, or a product line you might retire.

  2. 02
    Add one DNS record

Create a CNAME record for that subdomain pointing at LabelRoot. It is a single record at your DNS provider and it does not affect the records serving your website, store, or email.

  3. 03
    Verify and preview

Once the record resolves, the subdomain is verified and HTTPS is issued automatically. You can scan the real address and read the real page before anything reaches artwork.

  4. 04
    Lock it before artwork

Confirm the exact hostname on the proof. This is the one part of the printed address that cannot be changed later.

Why the domain is the part that matters

Everything after the domain is a routing decision you can revisit. The domain itself is a permanent commitment the moment it is printed. That asymmetry is the whole argument for using your own.

If the printed hostname belongs to your company, then whatever happens to any vendor — including us — your team can repoint that traffic. If it belongs to somebody else, your printed packaging depends on their continued goodwill and continued existence. We would rather tell you that plainly than sell you a hosted address for a production run.

Starting hosted is still a good idea

None of this means you should wait. A LabelRoot-hosted address is the fastest way to create a code, publish a page, and see the whole workflow on a real product with no DNS work at all.

Use it for previews, internal review, and proving the concept. Then connect your own subdomain before the artwork for a production run is locked. The two modes are the same product; only the printed hostname differs.

What your IT team will want to know

The change is limited to one subdomain. It adds a CNAME; it does not alter your apex domain, your MX records, or anything serving your existing site.

  • A single CNAME on a dedicated subdomain, added at your DNS provider.
  • No change to apex records, mail routing, or your website's hosting.
  • TLS certificates issued and renewed automatically for that subdomain.
  • The record can be repointed by your team at any time, without our involvement.

Common questions

01Do I need to move my website?

No. You add one subdomain such as id.yourbrand.com. LabelRoot handles that subdomain while your existing website, store, and email keep working exactly as they do now.

02Can I start hosted and move to my own domain later?

Yes, and that is the recommended path for testing. The important detail is timing: whichever hostname is on the artwork when it goes to print is the one that stays on the packaging, so connect your domain before a production run rather than after.

03What happens to a brand-owned link if we stop using LabelRoot?

Because your company controls the domain, your team can point that subdomain somewhere else. That is the practical reason to print your own domain on a long production run.
