Product QR codes you can update after printing
A product QR code is a two-dimensional barcode printed on packaging that opens a web address when a shopper scans it with a phone camera. With LabelRoot the printed address never changes, but the page it opens can be changed at any time — so a code committed to a print run does not lock you into the content you had on the day you sent artwork to the printer.

Static and dynamic QR codes are not the same commitment
A static QR code encodes its final destination directly in the printed pattern. If that URL ever moves, breaks, or points at a campaign that ended, the only fix is new packaging. Brands discover this the first time a landing page is retired and 40,000 printed pouches start leading to a 404.
A dynamic QR code encodes an address that resolves through a service you control. The pattern on the package stays identical for its whole life, while the destination behind it is a setting you can edit. That single difference is what makes a printed code safe to commit to a long production run.
What is permanent, and what is not
It is worth being precise about this, because the distinction decides how much freedom you keep after printing.
- Permanent: the hostname and path printed inside the code, for example id.yourbrand.com/01/00860001234567.
- Permanent: the product identifier that address is built around, normally your GTIN.
- Changeable: the page that address opens, its content, and the links on it.
- Changeable: where the code sends people in different markets or during a campaign.
Why the hostname deserves a decision before you print
Everything after the domain can be rerouted, but the domain itself is fixed the moment the plate is cut. If the printed address is on a domain your company owns, you keep the ability to point that traffic anywhere in the future, including away from LabelRoot. If it is on a shared hosted domain, you are relying on that host continuing to resolve it.
Neither choice is wrong. Using a hosted address is the fastest way to test a code and prove the workflow. But before artwork is locked for a production run, decide deliberately which domain goes on the package.
Common questions
01Can you change a QR code after it is printed?
You cannot change the printed pattern itself, and you cannot change the web address encoded inside it. You can change what that address opens, provided the code was created as a dynamic code pointing at a destination you control. A static QR code that encodes a final URL cannot be redirected after printing.
02Do dynamic QR codes expire?
The printed pattern does not expire. What can fail is the service resolving the address behind it. That is why the domain printed on your packaging matters: a domain your company owns can be repointed by your team even if you change software vendors.
03Does a product QR code replace the UPC barcode?
Not yet, and you should not plan as though it does. Retailer readiness for scanning 2D barcodes at checkout varies widely, so most brands keep the existing linear UPC barcode on the package alongside the QR code during the transition.
