PLUGINS
Use LabelRoot in ChatGPT and Codex
The LabelRoot plugin gives ChatGPT and Codex two read-only tools for product identity and connected packaging: validate a GTIN, UPC, or EAN and format a candidate LabelRoot GS1 Digital Link, or check what public LabelRoot product page currently resolves for that identifier.
IN SHORT
- Validate GTIN-8, UPC-A, EAN-13, and GTIN-14 identifiers and check digits.
- Format a candidate /01/{GTIN} GS1 Digital Link for a product QR code.
- Resolve a GTIN to public product information currently published on LabelRoot.
- No LabelRoot account is required; both tools are read-only and do not edit products.
Step by step
- 01Add LabelRoot
Find LabelRoot in the ChatGPT plugin directory after public approval. Developers reviewing the MCP server can register https://labelroot.com/mcp from ChatGPT developer mode. The connection requires no LabelRoot login.
- 02Paste the product identifier
Give ChatGPT a GTIN-8, UPC-A, EAN-13, or GTIN-14 and ask it to validate the check digit, format a candidate product QR address, or check LabelRoot's public resolution for that code.
- 03Verify before print
A formatted address is only a candidate until the product is registered. Resolve and scan-test the exact production URL and confirm the identifier and artwork with the brand, printer, and relevant retail partners.
GTIN, UPC, EAN, and GS1 Digital Link workflows
Use LabelRoot when a packaging or ecommerce workflow starts with the digits beneath a retail barcode. The plugin accepts GTIN-8, 12-digit UPC-A, 13-digit EAN, and GTIN-14, validates the check digit, and normalizes the identifier to the 14-digit form used in the LabelRoot /01/{GTIN} address.
The build tool returns a candidate GS1 Digital Link for planning and testing a product QR code. It does not establish that the identifier is assigned, that the product has been registered in LabelRoot, or that a retailer will scan the code at checkout.
Public product resolution
The resolve tool checks LabelRoot's own public product data. When a product is published, it can return the product name, brand, description, GS1 Digital Link, and published call to action. When no LabelRoot product is registered, it says so without treating that result as evidence about another barcode database.
The plugin cannot create, edit, publish, restore, or delete products. It does not expose a private catalog, user account, files, conversations, payment data, or product analytics.
Prompts to try
These prompts map directly to the plugin's read-only tools and use realistic product-identity language.
- Validate UPC 860001234565 and build its candidate LabelRoot GS1 Digital Link.
- Resolve GTIN 00860001234565 and tell me whether LabelRoot has a public product page for it.
- Check EAN 4006381333931, normalize it to GTIN-14, and format the LabelRoot product QR address.
Connection and data boundaries
The production MCP server is https://labelroot.com/mcp. It uses Streamable HTTP and requires no authentication because it exposes only public, read-only product-identity functions and LabelRoot's public product resolution.
LabelRoot receives the identifier supplied to the tool and technical request metadata needed to return and secure the response. It does not request or store ChatGPT or Codex conversation history, files, memories, account data, health data, or payment information.
Common questions
01Does the LabelRoot plugin issue or certify GTINs?
No. It validates identifier syntax and check digits and formats a candidate GS1 Digital Link. Brands obtain identifiers from GS1 and remain responsible for product identity, labeling, artwork, and retail acceptance.
02Can ChatGPT edit my LabelRoot product page?
No. The public plugin is read-only. It can format candidate product addresses and resolve public LabelRoot product data, but it cannot access an account or create, edit, publish, or delete a product.
03Does a valid candidate link mean it is ready to print?
No. The product must be registered in LabelRoot before the route is active. Resolve and scan-test the exact production URL and confirm the identifier and artwork before a print run.
